Core Drilling for MDU Fiber Installations
Precision concrete and masonry core drilling to create clean, code-compliant pathways for fiber cable in multi-dwelling units across the NY Metro and Northeast.
What We Do
The Foundation of Every MDU Fiber Build
Core drilling is where MDU fiber installation starts. Before a single foot of cable can run between floors, precise holes need to be cut through concrete slabs, masonry walls, and fire-rated assemblies. Done right, the rest of the build follows a clean path. Done wrong, it causes rework, code problems, and property damage that slows the entire project down.
ASI's crews are experienced in concrete and masonry core drilling across the full range of MDU construction types, from older brick-and-concrete buildings in the NYC metro to newer high-density residential construction on Long Island. We use diamond core drill bits sized to spec and fire-stop every penetration to meet building and carrier requirements.
Every core drilling scope we take on is coordinated with the building's structural requirements and the project's fiber layout plan, so there are no surprises once the cable crews arrive.
"Clean pathways from the start. Everything downstream depends on it."

How We Approach It
Core Drilling Process
Precision work starts before the drill turns on. Here's how ASI sequences the core drilling phase on a typical MDU fiber project.
Site Walkthrough & Layout Review
We review the building drawings, fiber layout plan, and floor-by-floor routing before marking a single hole. Core locations are confirmed against structural elements to avoid rebar conflicts and meet fire-rating requirements.
Core Location Marking
Penetration points are marked to align with conduit runs and riser pathways. Locations are confirmed with the project engineer or building owner before drilling begins.
Diamond Core Drilling
Wet or dry diamond core drilling sized to specification. Our equipment handles standard residential concrete up through heavy commercial slab construction. Debris is contained and cleaned on-site.
Fire-Stop Installation
Every penetration through a fire-rated assembly is fire-stopped with approved materials and documented. This is a code requirement and a carrier requirement, and it's included in every scope we complete.
Handoff to Cable Crew
Completed cores are handed off clean and ready for conduit or direct cable installation. ASI coordinates the handoff with the next phase so there's no gap between drilling and cabling.
Why It Matters
What Separates Precise Core Drilling From the Alternative
Sloppy core drilling creates problems that follow the project through every phase. Oversized holes compromise fire-stop integrity. Misaligned cores mean conduit runs that don't connect cleanly. Missed rebar creates structural issues that trigger building owner complaints and change orders.
ASI's team has worked in MDU buildings throughout the NYC metro and Long Island for years. We know the construction types, the common obstacles, and the documentation building owners expect at the end of the job. That experience shows up in the quality of the work and the lack of rework after we leave.
What We're Known For
-
Structural awareness. Every core location is reviewed against drawings before drilling. We don't guess and we don't create problems for the next crew.
-
Fire-stop compliance. Every penetration through a rated assembly is fire-stopped and documented. This isn't optional, and we treat it that way.
-
Clean job sites. Core drilling creates dust and debris. We contain it, clean it, and leave the building in the same condition we found it.
-
Sequenced with the full build. Drilling is coordinated with conduit and riser installation so the project keeps moving without waiting on each phase.
